Charity Shears Named Assistant Women's Basketball Coach

WILMINGTON, Ohio - Wilmington College Head Women's Basketball Coach Sydney Moss has announced the hiring of Charity Shears as the program's top assistant coach.

"I'm overly excited to have Charity join our program," said Moss. "Her playing career speaks for itself as she was an outstanding player. I look forward to what she will bring to our program!"

Shears comes to Wilmington from Lasalle University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she played her final season of collegiate women's basketball. Shears started 27-of-31 games as an Explorer and averaged seven points per game as one of the team's best three-point shooters.

"I cannot wait to start my coaching journey here at Wilmington College," Shears said. "Thank you to Coach Moss and the athletic department for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to work for and with them. I'm excited to see where the program is headed." 

Before Lasalle, Shears was a four-year member of the women's basketball program at West Virginia State University and earned All-Mount East Conference honors last year two years. A Second Team All-American, she averaged nearly 13 points pert game and made one of every three triple attempts. Shears scored over 1,000 career points and holds the conference record for both career three-pointers and points in a single game.

A native of Ashland, Kentucky, Shears helped her team to regional titles at Boyd County High School School including an appearance in the state semifinals as a senior. She earned a bachelor's degree in sport studies from West Virginia State and a master's degree in strategic communications from Lasalle.
