Women's Basketball Tripped Up On the Road at Muskingum

(NEW CONCORD, Ohio) – The Wilmington College women's basketball team was at Muskingum University Wednesday night in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) action and lost 71-53. With the loss, they are now 3-10 overall this season and 1-6 in the OAC.

Neither team scored until Muskingum hit a three-pointer with 6:45 to play in the first quarter to give them the lead. ZahKyria Walker answered for Wilmington with four straight points to give the Quakers a 4-3 advantage. The score was tied 8-8 with 2:03 to play in the period. The Muskies would make a three to go ahead 11-8 and would take a 13-10 lead into the second quarter.

Wilmington began the period with a 4-0 burst that included a Walker three to give the Quakers the lead back at 14-13 with 7:41 remaining in the half. Muskingum answered with a 7-0 run to hold a 20-14 lead. Their lead would continue to grow throughout the remainder of the half as they held a 31-21 advantage with 2:02 before the half. They would go into the break up 36-21 after outscoring the Quakers 23-11 in the quarter.

The Muskies lead would extend to 46-26 with 6:56 to play in the third frame. A Walker three with 1:10 to play in the quarter cut the lead to 13 at 53-40, but a late Muskies three took it to the final period at 56-40.

The Quakers continued to fight in the last quarter, cutting it to 11 at 58-47 with 6:03 to play. That was as close as they would get though, with the Muskies taking the game 71-53.

Notables

  • ZahKyria Walker scored a career-high and game-high 19 points on 7-16 shooting, while knocking down a trio of three-pointers to lead the Quakers.
  • Cassidy Lovett added 11 points for Wilmington.
  • Lovett and Stephanie Altstaetter tied for the team-lead with six rebounds.
  • Lovett led the team with five assists.
  • Lovett tied with Walker for the game-high of five steals. This is the fourth time this season that Lovett has recorded five or more steals in a game and is the first time for Walker.
  • Altstaetter had the lone blocked shot for Wilmington.
  • The Quakers seven made three-pointers is their second most in a game this season (8 at Earlham College on Dec. 18).
