TIFFIN, Ohio - Mackenzie Campbell broke a 68-68 deadlock with five seconds to play as the Wilmington College women's basketball team escaped Seiberling Gymnasium with a 70-68 victory over Heidelberg University in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) action on Saturday.
"Mackenzie [Campbell] was outstanding on both ends of the court tonight," Head Coach Jerry Scheve said. "She gave us huge baskets down the stretch."
Campbell scored the last seven points for Wilmington including the game-winner. Heidelberg tied the game with 1:07 to play, and after a Student Prince timeout, the Quakers committed a turnover. Wilmington then got a defensive stop with the game tied. Scheve called a 30-second timeout, and Campbell delivered the game-winner.
Wilmington led 22-12 after the first quarter, but Heidelberg would battle back to tie the game 32-32 with 2:21 to play in the first half on a layup from Aianna Wilson. Four points from Campbell closed out the half with the Quakers on top 36-32.
The Student Princes began the third quarter hot by scoring the first six points to take a four-point lead. The Quakers responded by a going on a 19-7 run over the next six minutes to take a 55-47 edge late in the third quarter.
Similar to the third quarter, the hosts cut the deficit early and eventually tied the game 63-63 with 3:55 to play. The Student Princes would never take the lead in the fourth quarter, however, as Campbell sealed the win for Wilmington.
Campbell led all scorers with her 29 points while also recording a double-double with 11 rebounds. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native established a new career high by one point with her previous career high also coming at Heidelberg (Jan. 21, 2017). McKayla Binkley and Faith Teaford also finished in double figures in scoring while Savannah Hooper dished out four assists.
Wilson led Heidelberg with 21 points in defeat. Madelyn Crawford and Brittanie added 14 points each.
Wilmington converted 27-of-62 field goals for 43.5 percent while Heidelberg made 23-of-58 field goal attempts. The Quakers held a 43-32 rebounding edge.
"Tonight was a great team win for us on the road against a good team," said Scheve. "We have a lot of room for improvement and are going to have to work hard this week to get ready for Marietta [College]."
The Quakers (5-2, 2-1 Ohio Athletic Conference) will travel to Marietta next Saturday for a 3 p.m. contest.
