Baseball Steps Out of Conference Play Wednesday

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College baseball team steps out of conference play on Wednesday when Wittenberg University comes to Tewksbury-Delaney Field for a 4:30 p.m. contest on Wednesday.

The Teams: Wilmington and Wittenberg. The Fightin' Quakers are 7-23 overall after splitting a pair of one-run games against the University of Mount Union on Monday. The Tigers are 15-12 on the season and host Ohio Northern University on Tuesday.

The Coaches: The 2019 season marks the new era for Wilmington College baseball team as the head coach Tony Vittorio starts his first season in charge of the program. He most recently served as the head coach at the University of Dayton for 18 seasons. Brian McGee is in his third season as Wittenberg's head coach. He had previous stops at the University of Toledo, Greensboro College and Lake Erie College.

The Hitters: Gage Bley leads Wilmington in several offensive categories including: batting average (.398), hits (51), runs scored (28), doubles (17), triples (2) and RBIs (29). Nick Silvis also carries a .328 batting average including 17 RBIs while Luke Kleindl leads the Quakers in home runs with three and RBIs with 20. Jack Hollinshead has driven in 31 RBIs for Wittenberg along with hitting four home runs. Jack Siefert and Hayden Knox have also hit home runs for the Tigers.

The Pitchers: Jared Ferenchak, who earned a complete-game victory in 10 innings against Mount Union on Monday, leads Wilmington in innings pitched (56.2) as well as carrying a 3.65 ERA. Matt Oney, who has pitched in relief for the better part of the year, has a 4.22 ERA in 21.1 innings pitched. Additionally, Lance Fleischman has a team-best 36 strikeouts. Adam Mays and Jace Barga both have at least three wins with under a 4.00 ERA for Wittenberg.

Series History: Wilmington is 5-9 against Wittenberg in the last decade. The Tigers defeated the Quakers 16-8 in Springfield earlier this season. More information on the series history can be viewed by visiting the links above.
