Baseball Rallies in Ninth, Falls 4-2 at Earlham

RICHMOND, Indiana – The Wilmington College baseball team couldn't solve Earlham College starter Kyle Gorman until the ninth inning in a 4-2 loss in the game one of the Quaker Bowl Rivalry series on Friday.

The Hustlin' Quakers tagged Jarett Trautman with two runs on three hits in the first inning. Wilmington's senior starter got out of the second inning unscathed by leaving the bases loaded, but a single run in both the third and fourth inning gave the hosts a 4-0 lead after four complete.

Wilmington mounted a comeback in the ninth inning as Shane Hale and Nick Silvis, who hit singles with one out, were driven in on a double by Gage Bley. Unfortunately for the visitors, a pop out and a foul out ended the game.

Gorman earned the complete-game win scattering six hits with five strikeouts while Trautman dipped to 0-2 allowing three earned runs on eight hits with six strikeouts over five innings. Thomas Hueber and Adam Doerger held Earlham scoreless over the final three innings in relief.

Offensively, Silvis finished 2-of-4 for Wilmington while Bley and Luke Kleindl, in his first action of the year, both hit doubles. Austin Hatfield led Earlham going 3-of-4 with two RBIs. The hosts also swiped four stolen bases.

The Quaker Bowl Rivalry series will conclude with a doubleheader tomorrow (Saturday) beginning at 1 p.m.
