Volleyball Sweeps UC Clermont in Non-Conference Finale

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College volleyball team swept the University of Cincinnati  Clermont College (UC Clermont) for the second time this season, defeating the Cougars in straight sets 25-20, 25-18, 25-22 in the non-conference finale on Thursday evening.

The Fightin' Quakers hit a blistering .485 clip in the first set with 19 kills and just three errors. The Cougars countered with a .296 hitting percentage of their own, but could not hang with Wilmington's offense clicking on all cylinders early.

After winning set two, Wilmington took a large lead in set three looking for the sweep. The Quakers led 24-14 after a block from Mariella Szrom and Jillian Wesco, but UC Clermont earned a side out on a serve error. Zoe England stepped to the service line and fought off seven match points before another block from Szrom and Wesco at 24-22 gave the hosts the straight-set win.

The Quakers featured a three-headed attack as Wesco, Szrom and Karrah Wind all recorded double digits in kills. Wesco finished with 13 kills and 10 digs while Szrom, who featured a .444 attack percentage, and Wind both put down 10 kills. Jacie Koontz and Summer Wilbur combined for 36 assists while Karley Schlensker added 16 digs.

Haley Fannin led UC Clermont with eight kills in defeat. Kelsie Holland had 11 digs for the Cougars' back row.

Wilmington (8-17) travels to Baldwin Wallace University for a 1 p.m. match on Saturday.
