Women's Soccer Opens Season at Defiance Tournament This Weekend

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College women's soccer team kicks off its 2018 season at the Defiance College Tournament this weekend.

The Schedule: Wilmington will face host Defiance at 3 p.m. on Friday followed by Westminster College of Pennsylvania at noon on Saturday, Sept. 1.

The Teams: Wilmington, Defiance and Westminster. The Fightin' Quakers finished the 2017 season with a 6-10-2 overall record including a 2-6-1 record in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play. The Yellow Jackets are looking to rebound from a 1-13-2 campaign in 2017 while the Titan turned in 10-9 record last year.

The Coaches: Steve Spirk enters his 27th season as Wilmington's head women's soccer coach. Spirk, a 1982 alumnus, has led the Quakers to six NCAA Division III Tournaments, eight conference championships and over 300 victories during his tenure. A member of the Wilmington Athletics Hall of Fame, Spirk was a four-time All-American and holds several of the College's men's soccer records. Jenny Vincent enters her fifth season as head coach at Defiance while Girish Thakar has led both the men's and women's soccer teams at Westminster since 2002.

The Players: Wilmington returns two of its three top offensive producers in Alex Vestal and Hanna Greaney. Vestal netted eight goals and dished out two assists for a total of 18 points while Greaney scored six goals. Kat Wicher scored two goals for the Yellow Jackets while Kayla Trozzi tallied 13 points for Westminster.

Series History: Wilmington is 6-0 against Defiance in the last three decades. The most recent matchup was a 7-0 victory for the Quakers on Sept. 4, 2015. The Quakers are 0-1 against Westminster in that stretch of time with the one loss coming in a 1-0 game on Sept. 7, 2005.
