WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College women's soccer team faces a road test at Earlham College on Wednesday afternoon in the Quaker Bowl Rivalry. Kickoff from Matlack-Messer Stadium is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
The Teams: Wilmington and Earlham. The Fightin' Quakers are 4-2-0 overall and have won their last two road contests including a 3-1 win at Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) member Anderson University on Saturday. The Hustlin' Quakers are also 4-2-0 and also riding a two-game winning streak after shutting out St. Mary-of-the-Woods College 7-0 on Saturday.
The Coaches: Steve Spirk enters his 27th season as Wilmington's head women's soccer coach. Spirk, a 1982 alumnus, has led the Quakers to six NCAA Division III Tournaments, eight conference championships and over 300 victories during his tenure. A member of the Wilmington Athletics Hall of Fame, Spirk was a four-time All-American and holds several of the College's men's soccer records. Chad Hardin, the former head coach of Marian University, led Earlham to a 7-10-1 mark last season.
The Players: A trio of Quakers – Lakyn Hupp, Paige Lane and Taylor Leake – has all scored two goals for Wilmington. Madison Wiedeman leads the team in assists with three while Leda Moyer averages giving up less than one goal per game in net for Wilmington. Yana Miller leads Earlham in scoring with four goals while Haley Beel and Abby McCullough have both scored three times.
Series History: Wilmington is 6-2-0 against Earlham in the last three decades. Wilmington has won the last five meetings in shutout fashion including a 5-0 win last season. More information on the series history can be viewed by visiting the link above.
Quaker Bowl Rivalry: Prior to the 2017-18 academic year, Wilmington and Earlham announced a yearly competition between the two schools. Wilmington won the inaugural bowl last year, beating Earlham 10-2. This season, however, Earlham currently leads 3-1. More information on the Quaker Bowl can be viewed by visiting the link above.
