Men's Soccer Travels to Heidelberg for OAC Opener on Saturday

SERIES HISTORY

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College men's soccer team opens Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play at Heidelberg on Saturday. The Fightin' Quakers and Student Princes will kick-off at 2 p.m.

The Teams: Wilmington and Heidelberg. The Quakers are 5-3-0 overall and have won their last three contests in shutout fashion including most recently defeating Franklin College 3-0 on Tuesday. The Student Princes stand at 3-4-0 overall, but have won their last two contests including a 3-2 overtime victory over Oberlin College on Tuesday.

The Coaches: Alex Van der Sluijs is in his first year leading Wilmington's men's soccer team. The 2007 alumnus, who was a three-time First Team All-OAC selection and a member of the program's only team to win an OAC title in 2004, worked at Defiance College for seven seasons. Pat Svihlik is in his third seson and Heidelberg and led the Student Princes to an 11-5-1 mark in 2017.

The Players: Niklas Martensson has scored 10 of Wilmington's 18 goals as a team thus far this season including scoring the first two goals in the win over Franklin. Daniel Kappelin and Benny Spirk have both scored three goals for Wilmington while Adriel Ortiz and Leon Tank have both found the back of the net once. In goal, Felix Maurer has posted three consecutive shutouts. Antonio Demonte has scored three goals for Heidelberg while Cory Gilbert and Simon Joseph have both found the back of the net twice for the Student Princes.

Shutouts Galore: Wilmington has shutout its last three opponents – 1-0 at Bethany, 4-0 vs. Earlham and 3-0 vs. Franklin.

Series History: Wilmington is 10-9-2 against Heidelberg since the 1993 season. The Student Princes won the last meeting between the two teams, 3-1 on Oct. 28, 2017. More information on the series history can be viewed by visiting the link above.
