WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College men's soccer team held No. 22 Kenyon College scoreless for over 41 minutes, but the Lords struck for three goals in under 14 minutes to defeat the Fightin' Quakers 4-0 in game two of the Kiwanis Classic on Friday evening.
Kenyon (2-0-1) fired four shots in the first 40 minutes, but the Wilmington defense was up to the challenge, blocking two of the them and Felix Maurer saved another. The Lords finally broke through when Jack Cohen sent a cross into the box that found the head of Thomas Munoz Reyes, who's header beat Maurer for the game's first goal.
Wilmington was outshot 8-2 in the first 45 minutes, but got to the halftime break trailing by just a goal. Just over 90 seconds into the second half, Kenyon doubled its lead as Philippe Stengel found the back of the net for the second time this season off a cross from John Penas.
Leading 2-0, the Lords added three more goals in the next 20 minutes including a howitzer of a shot from David Anderson from 25-yards out in the 65ths minute.
In total, Kenyon tallied 18 shots compared to three for Wilmington. Leon Tank fired the Quakers' lone shot on goal which was saved by the Lords' goalkeeper, Ian McInturf. Wilmington's goalkeeper, Felix Maurer, took the loss allowing four goals and making five saves.
Wilmington (1-2-0) will face Denison University, which defeated Adrian College 2-0 on Friday, in the final game of the 2018 Kiwanis Classic tomorrow (Saturday). Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Williams Stadium.
