Baseball Hosts ONU on Senior Day Saturday

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College baseball team concludes its 2019 season by hosting Ohio Northern University (ONU) for an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) series on Saturday. First pitch from Dayton Christian High School is scheduled for 1 p.m.

The Teams: Wilmington and Ohio Northern. The Fightin' Quakers are 7-28 overall and 3-13 in OAC play. Wilmington most recently fell to Miami University-Hamilton 13-4 on Wednesday. The Polar Bears are 19-15 overall and 9-7 in conference competition after splitting a series with Muskingum University on Sunday.

The Coaches: The 2019 season marks the new era for Wilmington College baseball team as the head coach Tony Vittorio starts his first season in charge of the program. He most recently served as the head coach at the University of Dayton for 18 seasons. Gene Stechschulte, a former major league pitcher, is in his eighth season as ONU's head coach.

The Hitters: Gage Bley leads Wilmington in several offensive categories including: batting average (.384), hits (56), runs scored (30), doubles (17), triples (2) and RBIs (32). Nick Silvis also carries a .326 batting average including 19 RBIs while Luke Kleindl leads the Quakers in home runs with three and has also driven in 20 runs. Antonio Miller has stolen 31 bases compared to being caught just six times. A trio of Polar Bears – Michael Rocco, Caleb Thomas and Luke Klinehoffer – has all driven in 20-plus runs for ONU. Rocco leads the team with a .415 batting average and a dozen stolen bases.

The Pitchers: Jared Ferenchak, who earned a complete-game victory in 10 innings against Mount Union a week ago, leads Wilmington in innings pitched (60.2) as well as carrying a 4.45 ERA. Matt Oney, who has pitched in relief for the better part of the year, has a 4.76 ERA in 22.2 innings pitched. Nate Bye leads ONU with 54.2 innings pitched and 35 strikeouts. Jack Schaller, who joins Bye with ERAs under 3.00, has a team-best five victories.

Senior Day: The series represents the final games for the careers of seven seniors – Antonio Miller, Gage Bley, Jared Ferenchak, Jake Hyatt, Jarett Trautman, Bryant McCarty and Shane Hale. A brief ceremony will be held prior to the series.

Series History: Wilmington is 8-14 against ONU in the last decade. The Quakers have won the last two meetings, however. More information can be found by visiting the link above.
