(WILMINGTON, Ohio) – The Wilmington College softball team celebrated Senior Day Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of conference foe John Carroll University. They won game one, 7-5 before shutting out the Blue Streaks 3-0 in game two. Claire Scully led the Quakers with three runs batted in (RBI) over the two games while a few other Quakers had two RBI during the day.

The Quakers are now 17-18-1 overall this season and 5-11 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). They are right back on the field tomorrow afternoon on the road at Transylvania University.

Game One – Wilmington defeats John Carroll, 7-5

The Blue Streaks jumped ahead 2-0 with a single run in the first and second innings, as Wilmington had just one hit over the first two frames.

This changed in the third inning, as the Quakers struck for five runs and a 5-2 advantage. Wilmington loaded the bases with nobody out. Jocelyn Franz got the Quakers first run on the board with an RBI single to left field before a Judaea Wilson sacrifice fly tied the game at 2-2. Later in the inning, Claire Scully had a two-RBI single before the final run scored on an Alasandra Spears single through the left side of the infield.

A two-out Franz single scored another run for Wilmington in the fourth inning to increase their lead to 6-2. A Kori Cornett infield single brought in the Quakers final run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

John Carroll made things interesting in the final frame. They scored two runs and forced a pitching change for Wilmington with the score at 7-5. Laney Starbuck entered the game with one out and got the two hitters she faced out to earn the save.

Game Two – Wilmington defeats John Carroll, 3-0

The two teams only mustered one hit through the first three innings of play in game two.

Wilmington bucked the trend in the fourth inning and scored the game's only three runs. After a sacrifice bunt, the Quakers had runners at second and third with one out. A pair of extra base hits followed with a Samantha Schwab two-RBI double and a Claire Scully RBI triple for the lead.

That was all Hillary Huffer needed as she shut down the John Carroll offense and tossed a complete game shutout.

Game Two Notables

  • This is the first complete game shutout of Hillary Huffer's Quakers career. She only allowed four hits and had three strikeouts.
  • Five Quakers had one hit in the game.
