(LEESBURG, Fla.) – The Wilmington College softball team finished up their spring break trip this afternoon at The Spring Games with a pair of run-rule victories over Susquehanna University (9-1) and McDaniel College (11-3). Samantha Schwab had a historical day for the Quakers at the plate, going 4-6 with four homeruns and 11 runs batted in (RBI). She hit three homeruns in the first game and another one in the second game. The Quakers are now 5-5 overall this season and will be at home for the first time this year on Tuesday afternoon against Anderson University (Ind.).
Wilmington defeats Susquehanna, 9-1 (6 innings)
Wilmington got off to a hot start in the game, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. It started with a Kori Cornett double down the left field line before Judaea Wilson doubled her home a few batters later to make it 1-0. Samantha Schwab was up next and drove one over the left field wall for the Quakers first homerun of the season and a 3-0 lead.
The lead grew to 6-0 after the third inning. Rachel Berry started the second inning with a single and later came around to score on a wild pitch. Wilson singled to start the third inning and Schwab followed with her second homerun of the game, a shot to dead center field for the 6-0 advantage.
Wilmington had runners in scoring position in the fourth and fifth innings, but no one came in to score. The River Hawks plated one run in the bottom of the fifth frame. After an out to start the top of the sixth, Jocelyn Franz worked a walk before Wilson singled down the left field line. Schwab stepped up to the plate and roped another homerun, this time a three-run shot to right center field for a 9-1 lead. The Quakers shut the door in the bottom of the sixth for the win.
Game One Notables
- Samantha Schwab became the first Quaker since Arianna Layne on April 17th, 2021 to hit two homeruns in a game, and the first Quaker since at least 2013 to hit three homeruns in a game. She had seven RBI in the game and scored three runs.
- Judaea Wilson went 3-4 at the plate with one RBI and three runs scored.
- McKenna Archey and Claire Scully both had two hits for Wilmington.
- Kori Cornett drew two walks in the contest.
- Aiyana Hancock pitched a complete game for Wilmington, allowing one unearned run and six hits while striking out five River Hawks.
Wilmington defeats McDaniel, 11-3 (5 innings)
The Green Terror plated one run in the top of the first inning. Wilmington quickly loaded the bases in the bottom of the first after two walks and a Judaea Wilson single to right field. Picking up where she left off in game one, Samantha Schwab destroyed a ball over the left field fence for a grand slam and a 4-1 Quakers lead. Wilmington scored three more runs in the inning, after RBI singles from Chloe Dorn and Kori Cornett. The last run scored after a delayed steal from Cornett forced a rundown, which allowed Dorn to score and push the lead to 7-1.
The Quakers struck for four more runs over the following three innings. In the second frame, Wilson scored on a wild pitch and Claire Scully had an RBI groundout. Wilson had an RBI single in the third inning and Rachel Berry hit an RBI double to right center field in the fourth inning. The Quakers walked away with the comfortable 11-3 victory.
Game Two Notables
- Samantha Schwab hit the first grand slam for Wilmington since Hayley Suchland on March 12th, 2020, in a 7-5 victory over SUNY Canton. Schwab scored one run and walked in the game.
- Alasandra Spears led the Quakers with three hits and Judaea Wilson had two hits. They both scored two runs in the contest.
- Hillary Huffer threw a complete game for the Quakers, allowing six hits while striking out seven.
