After Tough Game One Loss, Quakers Struggle in Game Two at Muskingum

(NEW CONCORD, Ohio) – The Wilmington College softball team dropped a heartbreaker in game one Sunday afternoon to Muskingum University, 8-7 before losing game two 8-0. The Quakers had the Fighting Muskies down to their final out, but Muskingum scored three runs to walk off game one. Kori Cornett and Ashley Hardesty both had three hits during the day for the Quakers. Wilmington falls to 13-14-1 overall this season.

Game One – Muskingum defeats Wilmington, 8-7 (8 innings)

The Muskies took a 3-0 lead after the first two innings of play. The Quakers had runners on second and third with just one out in the top of the second, but couldn't plate a run. They did strike for two runs in the top of the third on a Judaea Wilson RBI single to bring in Kori Cornett, while Jocelyn Franz was thrown out at the plate during the same play. Wilson would later score on an error.

Wilmington scored with two outs in the top of the fourth on a Wilson bases loaded walk to cut the deficit to 5-3, after Muskingum scored two more in the bottom of the third. This lead would stay until the sixth inning, where a Franz two-out single brought in a run to make it 5-4.

In the top of the seventh, Wilmington was down to their final out with a runner on first base. Rachel Berry came through with a huge RBI double to plate the tying run. Wilmington held the Muskies in the bottom of the inning to send it to extras.

Cornett scored on a wild pitch in the eighth to give Wilmington a 6-5 lead. A two-out Claire Scully infield single allowed Wilson to score and extend their lead to 7-5 heading into the bottom of the eighth.

A two-RBI double with two outs tied the game in the eighth before a single won it for the Muskies.

Game Two – Muskingum defeats Wilmington, 8-0 (5 innings)

The Quakers fell behind 4-0 after the first two innings and Muskingum never looked back. The Quakers had runners in scoring position in the second, third, and fifth innings.
