Quakers Split Day one at The Spring Games

(LEESBURG, Fla.) – It was the first day of The Spring Games for the Wilmington College softball team. They took down Occidental College, 8-0 in six innings, before dropping a 10-2 decision in five innings to Albertus Magnus College.  In the first game, the Quakers were led by three Kori Cornett RBI, while game two saw Chloe Dorn provide the lone Wilmington RBI. They return to the field tomorrow morning at 9:00 A.M. for their first game of a doubleheader.

Game One – Wilmington defeats Occidental, 8-0 (6 innings)

Judaea Wilson tripled over the center fielder's head to get the second inning started. The next batter, Maddie Starnes, brought in the first run of the day with an RBI single over the second baseman's head.

In the fourth, a pair of Quakers got on to start the inning before Starnes singled again to make it a 2-0 game. Wilmington stole a run later in the inning, where Kristen Whitney stole second and allowed Judaea Wilson to score on the fielder's choice and give Wilmington a 3-0 lead.

The Quakers plated five runs in the sixth on an RBI single from Alasandra Spears, three-RBI double to right center field by Kori Cornett, and an RBI single up the middle from Jocelyn Franz. Wilmington held the lead in the sixth to win it 8-0.

Game One Notables

  • Aiyana Hancock pitched a complete game shutout in the circle for Wilmington, earning her first win of the season. She struck out six hitters.
  • Maddie Starnes had three hits and two RBI, while scoring one run.
  • Judaea Wilson had two hits and scored two runs.
  • Jocelyn Franz had a pair of hits for Wilmington and drove in one run.

 Game Two – Albertus Magnus defeats Wilmington, 10-2 (5 innings)

The Quakers fell behind 7-0 after the first inning and a half of play. Chloe Dorn had the lone RBI for Wilmington on a two-out single down the left field line in the bottom of the second to push it to 7-1. Mollie Moore would later steal second in the same inning, forcing a throw down, which allowed Dorn to score on a fielder's choice.

Wilmington had runners at second and third in the third and fifth innings but couldn't score a run. They dropped the game 10-2.

Game Two Notables

  • Only one of the 10 Falcons runs was earned.
  • Seven Quakers had a hit in the game.
  • Alasandra Spears and Chloe Dorn scored the runs for Wilmington, with Dorn providing the RBI.
  • Hillary Huffer had four strikeouts over 4.1 innings of relief.

What's Up Next

The Quakers are back on the field tomorrow morning in Florida at 9:00 A.M. against the University of Southern Maine Huskies, before playing the Salem State University Vikings at 11:15 A.M.
