Men's Soccer To Battle Polar Bears Wednesday

WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Wilmington College men's soccer team (9-0-2, 2-0-1) ranks third in the region heading into their 7 p.m. Wednesday night clash with the Ohio Northern Polar Bears (7-4-2, 2-1-0).

The Teams: Wilmington and Ohio Northern. Wilmington is fresh off of an overtime victory against Mount Union, another team ranked regionally. Ohio Northern have logged two consecutive shutout victories against OAC opponents and will be looking to continue their upward trend. 

The Coaches: Alex Van der Sluijs is in his fourth year leading Wilmington's men's soccer team. The 2007 alumnus, who was a three-time First Team All-OAC selection and a member of the program's only team to win an OAC title in 2004, got the program within a shootout victory of playing for an OAC Tournament title in the spring of 2021. He worked at Defiance College for seven seasons. Chris Matejka is in his third season at Ohio Northern with a winning percentage of .61. As interim head coach at ONU Chris Matejka led the team to the NCAA tournament with an at-large bid.

The Players: The potent offense of Quakers is led by Seniors Yusef Muqtadir and Elorm Dogbey who have combined for 13 goals. Michael Owusu leads the team with four assists. Senior Felix Maurer is allowing the second fewest goals per game in the OAC at .54. Trevor Tabb leads the Polar Bears with eight goals. Levi King and Tanner Locke have five assists each.

Regional Rankings: In the most recent regional rankings Wilmington was ranked third.

Series History: Wilmington is 2-7-1 in its last ten matches vs. ONU. Wilmington has won the previous two contests.
