Men's Soccer Hosts Mount Union Saturday in Battle of Regionally-Ranked Teams

WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Wilmington College men's soccer team continues to put its unbeaten record on the line Saturday when the University of Mount Union comes to Williams Stadium for a 7 p.m. contest.

The Teams: Wilmington and Mount Union. The Fightin' Quakers are 8-0-2 on the season and 1-0-1 in conference play after a 3-0 road victory at Muskingum University on Wednesday evening. The Purple Raiders began the season 7-0-1, but have lost their firs two Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) contests at home against Otterbein University and at John Carroll University.

The Coaches: Alex Van der Sluijs is in his fourth year leading Wilmington's men's soccer team. The 2007 alumnus, who was a three-time First Team All-OAC selection and a member of the program's only team to win an OAC title in 2004, got the program within a shootout victory of playing for an OAC Tournament title in the spring of 2021. He worked at Defiance College for seven seasons. David Krems is in his second season as Mount Union's coach. He was a four-year starter at Hiram College.

The Players: The Quakers boast a lethal offensive attack that leads the OAC as a team with 33 goals on the season with Elorm Dogbey and Yusef Muqtadir leading the way with seven and six goals respectively. Jeffry Vasquez has 12 points on the season for the Quakers and Brady Shapiro entered the scoring column after scoring the lone Quaker goal, his first of the year against Heidelberg University last Saturday.. Felix Maurer serves as the goalkeeper, allowing only five goals in 10 games. A trio of Purple Raiders - Rylan Wikle, Gavin Velazquez and Colton Priester - have scored 11-of-19 team goals so far this season.

Regional Rankings: Both teams apppear in the most recent United Soccer Coaches regional rankings. Wilmington is No. 4 and Mount Union is No. 5. 

Series History: Wilmington is 13-9-2 against Mount Union since the 1993 season. The Purple Raiders have won six of the last 10 meetings, however. More information on the series history can be viewed by visiting the link above.
