MARIETTA, Ohio - The Wilmington College men's soccer team handed Marietta College its first loss of the season with a 1-0 victory at Don Drumm Stadium on a windy Sunday afternoon. 

The win, the Fightin' Quakers' second over the Pioneers in the last seven tries, vaults Wilmington to 4-1-0 overall, into a tie in the standings with Marietta, which lost its first game of the season.

The hosts had the better offensive play in the first half, taking five shots to the visitors' one. Marietta took all five of those shots in the first 25 minutes, two of which were blocked by Quaker defenders, two were high and one was saved by Felix Maurer. Wilmington's one shot in the first half, off the foot of Elorm Dogbey in the 33rd minute, sailed wide.

The teams went into halftime scoreless, but Dogbey was determined to find his target in the second half. Wilmington earned a penalty kick in the 57th minute, but Zach Burgmeier, who scored a penalty kick goal in the Quakers' win over Ohio Northern University, missed this time. Two more Quaker shots in the following minute were also saved by Marietta goalkeeper, Dakota Penquite, but Dogbey pounced on a rebound on the second shot and scored the game's only goal.

"What a battle, I'm proud of our guys as we had to earn it today," Head Men's Soccer Coach Alex Van der Sluijs said. "It was a good old-fashioned OAC game. Not a game of a lot of chances, but we took our moment and most importantly kept a clean sheet."

Marietta held a 13-8 advantage in shots, but seven of Wilmington's eight shots were on target compared to just three of the Pioneers' 13. Maurer made all three saves and, alongside a stout defense, earned the clean sheet.

Ian Molfenter led Wilmington with three shots on goal while Reggie Grayek fired four shots for Marietta.

The Quakers (4-1-0) head to Otterbein University on Thursday.
