Spring Senior Salute - Baseball's Matt Oney

Spring Senior Salute - Baseball's Matt Oney

WILMINGTON, Ohio - Throughout the coming months, the Wilmington College athletics department will be highlighting senior student-athletes who had their senior seasons cut short due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.

Today's senior salute is Matt Oney. A four-year member of the program, Oney pitched over 105 innings wearing the Green & White and tallied three victories, all in his freshman season. In the shortened 2020 season, Oney pitched six innings and carried a career-best 7.50 K/9 average.

What is your major? - History and Educational Studies

What is your favorite class at Wilmington College? - Senior seminar

What is your favorite memory with the baseball program? - The first start of my collegiate career

What are your plans after graduation? - I plan to either team or work in archives, along with coaching baseball.

Do you see yourself returning to Wilmington to compete in 2021? - It depends on if I have to take more classes and pay for another semester. I love the game of baseball more than anything, but if I have to spend more money than I need to, I probably won't be returning.

What is your message to underclassmen on the impact of COVID-19? - Spend and cherish every moment you have with one another as you never know when those moments will be taken away from you. I never got to say goodbye to my teammates because I was hurt about the virus pandemic, but I would tell my teammates good luck and that I believe they will make a huge impact in this program and this school. I'd also tell them thank you.
