Baseball Heads to Richmond for Quaker Bowl Rivalry Game With Earlham

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College baseball team heads to Earlham College for a Quaker Bowl Rivalry game on Tuesday. First pitch from Sadler Stadium is slated for 6 p.m.

The Teams: Wilmington and Earlham. The Fightin' Quakers are 0-4 on the season after a 7-5 loss to Elmhurst College (Illinois) at Dayton Christian High School on Sunday. The Hustlin' Quakers are 5-1 after sweeping three games with Olivet College (Michigan) at Sadler Stadium over the weekend.

The Coaches: The 2020 season continues the new era for Wilmington College baseball team as the head coach Tony Vittorio starts his second season in charge of the program. He most recently served as the head coach at the University of Dayton for 18 seasons. Steve Sakosits, in his eighth season at Earlham, led the program to the 2017 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) title.

The Hitters: Caleb Scott leads Wilmington offensively with a .429 batting average to go along with six hits, one of which is a home run, and two runs scored. Luke Kleindl has three hits and a .300 batting average for Wilmington while Joe Legin has stolen two bases. Marc Gendreau has a team-high 11 hits and 10 runs scored for Earlham while senior Danny Dopp has four doubles and 10 runs batted in.

The Pitchers: Luke Chappie has been effective for Wilmington in two starts this season. Though he doesn't yet have a victory, the Clinton-Massie alumnus carries a 3.75 ERA in 12 innings pitched to go along with eight strikeouts. Cameron Harbert has a perfect ERA in 3.1 innings pitched in relief. Joey Gerbus, the reigning HCAC Player of the Week, has a 1.80 ERA in 15 innings pitched with 14 strikeouts for Earlham.

Series History: Wilmington has lost 18 consecutive games to Earlham dating back to the 2012 season. More information on the series history can be viewed by visiting the link above.

Quaker Bowl Rivalry: The athletics departments of Wilmington and Earlham have re-created the Quaker Bowl rivalry. Originally a traveling trophy for just football and men's basketball, the bowl will now be competed for across all sports the two schools compete in. Wilmington has won the last two years including a 6-4 win over the 2018-19 academic year.
