Women's Soccer Heads to MSJ for Pair of Games Against HCAC Foes This Weekend

WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Wilmington College women's soccer team looks to rebound from a defeat in the season opener when the Fightin' Quakers head to Mount St. Joseph University (MSJ) for a pair of games down in Cincinnati this weekend.

The Schedule: Wilmington will play host MSJ at 8 p.m. on Saturday and will compete against Transylvania University at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

The Teams: Wilmington, MSJ and Transylvania. The Quakers are 0-1-0 after falling to Ohio Wesleyan University 3-1 at Williams Stadium on Wednesday. The Lions are also looking to get in the win column after a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Centre College on Wednesday, while the Pioneers edged out Maryville University 1-0 to open the year.

The Coaches: Steve Spirk returns to coach his 30th year for the Wilmington women's soccer team. Spirk has led the Quakers to six NCAA Division III Tournament appearances including five berths in the regional semifinal ("Sweet 16") round. Six Wilmington teams have claimed regular season conference titles under Spirk's tutelage including three OAC titles in a span of four years from 2000-03. Darren Gallagher is MSJ's head coach while Patrick Farmer, who led Ithaca College two a pair of national championships in the early 1990s, is in his fourth season as Transylvania's head coach.

The Players: Wilmington junior goalkeeper Lauren Galloway, an All-Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) goalkeeper, tallied 11 saves on 14 shots faced in the season opener. Maddie Scott, who missed the 2021 spring season due to injury, netted the Quakers' goal. Hannah Surber scored the goal for the Lions while Mackenzie Buckler's goal proved to be the game-winning for Transylvania.

Series History: Wilmington is 16-4-2 against MSJ and 4-3-2 against Transylvania in the last 35 seasons. More information on the series history can be viewed by visiting the link above.
