GENEVA, Ohio – The Wilmington College women's swimming team wrapped up its 2020-21 season with a fifth-place finish at the 2021 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by John Carroll University at the SPIRE Institute.
The Fightin' Quakers tallied 276 points as a team, finishing 119 points behind fourth-place Baldwin Wallace University. John Carroll won the championship with 1,017 points while the University of Mount Union had 659 points to finish as runner-up. Ohio Northern University rounded out the standings with a third-place finish and 590 points.
"We are extremely thankful to have the season that we did," Head Coach Trip Breen said. "We appreciate the hard work that the OAC Presidents and athletics directors did to provide us with this opportunity."
Macki Leon closed out an incredible career with yet another All-OAC honor and a new school record in the 200-yard backstroke. The senior from Ashland, Ohio, swum a time of 2:08.84 in the event while teammates Ashley Carlson (2:22.25) and Kadie Grundy (2:27.00) took seventh and eighth in the consolation finals.
Four Quakers – Emma Thomas (19:38.08), Margaret Hover (19:47.91), Olivia Bender (20:42.29) and Alyssa Harper (21:37.60) – competed in the consolation final of the 1,650-yard freestyle and took fourth, fifth, eighth and ninth respectively. In the 100-yard freestyle, Wilmington had a trio of individuals place in the consolation final. Hannah Davis took fourth (56.46 seconds), Anna Endsley placed seventh (57.72 seconds) and Audrey Bibb finished eighth (58.52 seconds).
Symone Daniels also finished individually for Wilmington, swimming a time of 2:55.64 for a third-place finish in the consolation finals of the 200-yard breaststroke.
Wilmington's team in the 400-yard freestyle relay of Leon, Davis, Endsley and Hover tapped the wall in 3:44.15 for a fourth-place finish.
"The team was outstanding, even with a shortened training season and the challenges of COVID, we were able to set numerous team records and had an unbelievable amount of lifetime best performances," Breen said. "It is a testament to their outstanding work ethic and willingness to support each other. I will never forget this season and this amazing group of Wilmington College swimmers."
