Offense Sputters for Softball in OAC Opener at Baldwin Wallace

BEREA, Ohio – The Wilmington College softball team couldn't solve pitcher Marisa Hall in a pair of defeats at Baldwin Wallace University in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) opener for both teams on Sunday. The Yellow Jackets took game one 3-0 and won the nightcap 12-2 in five innings.

The Quaker offense struggled in both games, tallying just five hits in a dozen innings. In game, Hall struck out 15 batters including the side in the seventh for the victory. WC starter Izzy Rothrock gave her team a chance to win, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in six innings, but all BW needed was a single run. The Yellow Jackets plated two runs on four hits in the second and added an insurance run in the fourth.

Wilmington had two hits in the game coming off the bats of Logann Julian and Lindsey Carter, but the Quakers wouldn't get more than one running ion base in any inning.

Steph Mraz and Lucia Wilford combined for 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored for BW in the victory.

In the nightcap, Hall pitched the first three innings and allowed just a solo home run to Carter in the third. By that time, however, BW had built a significant lead. The Yellow Jackets chased WC starter Alexis Stringfellow after just one out and scored five runs on five hits in the first. Hillary Huffer finished the first and allowed a single run in the second, but a four-hit, four-run third put the game away.

Hall improved to 7-3 on the season with her second win of the day while Hannah Welling allowed a single hit and struck out five in two innings of work. Stringfellow suffered her second defeat of the season for WC while Huffer pitched two innings and Aiyana Hancock recording five outs.

Jackie Kasai led the way for BW in game two with a 3-for-4 performance with three RBIs while Mraz and Wilford were both 2-for-2. Carter, Samantha Schwab and Olivia Doll had the three Quaker hits.

Wilmington (10-8, 0-2 OAC) hosts Muskingum University on Tuesday. First pitch from the WC Softball Complex is scheduled for 3 p.m.
