Softball Hosting Marietta in "Strike Out Cancer" Series on Saturday

WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Wilmington College softball team hosts Marietta College in the program's "Strike Out Cancer" series on Saturday. The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) twinbill is slated to begin at 1 p.m.

The Teams: Wilmington and Marietta. The Quakers enter the contest 10-14 and looking for their first conference victory after a pair of defeats at the hands of Ohio Northern University on Saturday. The Pioneers are 15-7 overall and 5-1 in OAC contests after splitting a twinbill with rival Otterbein University on Wednesday. Marietta lost game one 5-1 and rebounded to take the nightcap 9-1 in five innings. 

The Coaches: Beth Floyd is in her 16th season as Wilmington's softball head coach. The winningest softball coach in school history, she also heads the College's coaching minor. Floyd has led the Quakers to the program's first winning season with a 20-16 record in 2013. Jenn Castle, a 2008 graduate of Ashland University, is in her fifth season as the Pioneers' head coach in 2023. Marietta finished 18-20 overall and 8-10 in league games in 2022.

The Hitters: Judaea Wilson and Lindsey Carter lead the Wilmington offense as both hit over a .400 clip and have combined for 73 hits and 37 runs scored. Wilson, once named the OAC Hitter of the Week, has a team-best four triples while Logann Julian and Samantha Schwab have combiend to drive in 34 runs. The Pioneer offense is championed by Rachel Kazmirski who brings a .59 batting average with 10 doubels, eight home runs and 33 RBIs into the weekend.

The Pitchers: Fifth-year senior Alexis Stringfellow has a 3.35 ERA and four victories for WC while three other Quakers - Avree Entler, Hillary Huffer and Izzy Rothrock - have all pitched nearly 30 innings and have ERAs between 4.00-4.50. Marietta carries a 3.56 ERA as a staff with Jillian Middleton's 3.35 ERA leading the way. She's pitched 60.2 innings for the Pioneers with 43 strikeouts.

Strike Out Cancer: The softball team will be doing a couple of things as part of the Strike Out Cancer series. See below:

  • Wearing warm-up shirts with pink lettering
  • Raffling 4-5 baskets between games
  • Accepting donations for the Joe Baab Foundation

Series History: Wilmington is 6-22 against Marietta since the 2009 season. The Pioneers have won the last four meetings. More information on the series history can be viewed by visiting the link above.
