Heidelberg Handles Volleyball In OAC Opener

TIFFIN, Ohio - Heidelberg University defeated the Wilmington College volleyball team in a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) matches from Seiberling Gymnasium on Friday evening. The Student Princes took the first match 25-13, 25-17, 25-19 and took the nightcap 25-14, 25-17, 25-22.

In the first match, Heidelberg hit a .316 clip in set one while Wilmington had seven kills and six errors. Both offenses heated up in set two with the Student Princes putting down 19 kills on 41 swings with four errors and the Fightin' Quakers notching a dozen kills with just one error on 31 swings. Set three was a much more defensive affair, but the result didn't change as the hosts took the match in straight sets.

Victoria Long led Wilmington with a dozen kills while Rachel Kennedy and Sydney Geibel both hit over .450 in the set. Sofia Thomas and McKenzie Stringer shared the setting duties to dish out 27 assists while Blake O'Brien and Karley Schlensker each notched 13 digs in the back row.

For Heidelberg, Lexi Evak and Maddie Szawrankskyj both tallied double digits in kills while Kelsey Custenborder dished out 22 assists and Sarah Oney had 21 digs.

In the nightcap, neither team hit as well as the first match. The Quakers had more attack errors that kills in all three sets while the Student Princes, after a .294 attack percentage in set one, struggled as well. Trailing two sets to none, Wilmington used two Heidelberg attack errors and a Joy Bebe kill to take a 21-17 lead in set three, but the Student Princes won eight of the final nine points to take the match in straight sets.

Wilmington (0-2) will head to Muskingum University on Tuesday.
