Volleyball Heads to Heidelberg for 2021 Spring Opener on Friday

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College volleyball team opens its 2021 spring season with an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) doubleheader at Heidelberg University on Friday evening. First serve from Seiberling Gymnasium is slated for 6 p.m.

The Teams: Wilmington and Heidelberg. The Fightin' Quakers are looking to improve upon a 3-24 overall record and a winless campaign in OAC play in the fall of 2019. The Student Princes complete that season 21-8 overall, but bowed out in the OAC Tournament quarterfinals with a four-set loss to Baldwin Wallace University.

The Coaches: A new era of Wilmington volleyball has arrived as Andy Riesenberg, an experienced coach at the NCAA Division I, II, III and club levels, enters his second season leading the program in the spring of 2021. The Mount St. Joseph University alumnus has spent time at Southern Illinois University, Xavier University and Ohio University as an assistant coach as well as a stint as head coach at NCAA Division II institution Lake Erie College. Jason Miller, Heidelberg's longest-tenured current head coach and also an associate director of athletics, is in his 21st season leading the Berg's volleyball program. He's been named OAC Women's Volleyball Coach of the Year 10 times.

The Players: Wilmington returns two – libero Karley Schlensker and defensive specialist Adriana Middleton – and welcomes 11 newcomers through the program. Heidelberg will need to replace three its top three offensive players from a season ago. Maddie Szawransky, who tallied 2.13 kills per set in 2019, is the top offensive returner for the Student Princes.

Series History: Since the 2008 season, Wilmington is winless against Heidelberg in a dozen matches. More information can be viewed by visiting the link above.
