Women's Soccer Heads to ONU in Battle of Unbeatens on Thursday

WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Wilmington College women's soccer team puts its unbeaten record on the line on Thursday with a trip to Ada for a date with Ohio Northern University at 7 p.m.

The Teams: Wilmington and Ohio Northern (ONU). The Fightin' Quakers are 1-0-2 on the season after coming from three goals down to tie the University of Mount Union 3-3 on Sunday. The Polar Bears are a perfect 3-0-0 and has yet to surrender a goal this year.

The Coaches: Steve Spirk is in his 29th year leading Wilmington's women's soccer team. The 1981 alumnus is a four-time All-American and one of the best players in men's soccer history. Spirk is the men's soccer leader in career goals (74), career assists (43), career points (191), single-season points (57 and 54) and season goals (22 twice). Mark Bateman, a 2000 WC graduate, is in his 17ths season as ONU's head coach. The Polar Bears have won four OAC titles under Bateman's watch.

The Players: A trio of Quakers – Heidi Edens, Taylor Huffman and Ema Menges – have netted a pair of goals for Wilmington while Carlie Brooks and Haley Fulton join Huffman in dishing out one assist. Alex Hoeffel leads ONU in scoring with three goals while Hailey McGuire and Siena Ward have each scored twice. Kristy Catrine, thanks to a stout ONU defense, has faced just four shots in 270 minutes in net.

Series History: Wilmington is 7-17-1 against Ohio Northern since the early 1990s. The Polar Bears are currently on a six-game winning streak in the series. More information on the series history can be viewed by visiting the link above.
