Quakers, Spartans play to scoreless draw

MANCHESTER, IN – The Wilmington College women's soccer team set a Wilmington NCAA record with its fifth shutout to start the season as the Lady Quakers played to a scoreless draw with Manchester Saturday in the Raven/Spartan Invitational.

Wilmington was able to unleash 25 shots in the contest. However, only eight of those were on goal. The Lady Quakers defense limited Manchester to just two shots in the match.

"That's a pretty low percentage (of shots on goal)," said head coach Steve Spirk. "When two-thirds of your shots are off goal, you are not going to score many goals. It wasn't because of lack of opportunity. It was not taking advantage of our opportunities and our decision-making in the final third wasn't as sharp as it should be."

Senior Sarah Watters (Cincinnati, OH/Turpin) got off a team-high six shots, two of which were on goal, while freshman Lauren Lewis (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) recorded four shots with one going on frame.

Freshman Sarah Stauffer (Beavercreek, OH/Beavercreek) registered her third straight shutout as the Spartans didn't manage a single shot on goal.

Wilmington (4-0-1) returns to action Thursday when the Fightin' Quakers travel to Cincinnati, OH for a non-conference game with the College of Mount St. Joseph Lions.
