ADA, OH – The Wilmington College women's soccer team had their season come to an end Monday with a 2-0 loss to Ohio Northern in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Ohio Athletic Conference tournament. It was just the third time this season Wilmington failed to score in a match.

With windy conditions, the Polar Bears won the toss and elected to have the wind at their backs. The move worked out for them as they got both their goals in the opening half.

Ohio Northern came out aggressive with eight shots, four of which were on goal, in the first 18 minutes. The hard work and shot volume finally paid off in the 24th minute as the Polar Bears scored. ONU gained insurance five minutes later with another tally. While taking the 2-0 lead into halftime, Ohio Northern got off 13 shots to Wilmington's two.

"For the most part we did a good job of defending," said Wilmington head coach Steve Spirk. "We let two people, actually the same girl both times, run through the midfield unmarked. We don't give uspthose shots when we are tied at half. Instead, we are playing from behind. I don't think we had a quality chance to score all day."

They finished the game with a 19-7 shot advantage.

Wilmington freshmen Lauren Lewis (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) and Rachelle Bowen (Xenia, OH/Xenia) combined to take five of the Quakers' seven shots.

Senior Hannah Riffel (Circleville, OH/Logan Elm) made seven saves in her final collegiate game. It was also the last game for Sarah Watters (Cincinnati, OH/Turpin) and Kayla Falkenbach (Springfield, OH/Greenon).

"I am very proud of this team," said Spirk. "The senior led the way. We got a lot of good leadership, talent from our seniors. They did a good job of teaching the younger players how to perform on the field and in the classroom. They helped set the standard of what we want from our players."

Wilmington finished over .500 for the first time since 2009 with a 12-7-1 record. The 12 victories were the most by the Lady Quakers since they recorded 15 in 2008.
