DEFIANCE - After suffering its first loss of the season, the Wilmington women's soccer team got back in the swing of things by posting its seventh shutout of the season, beating Defiance Saturday, 3-0, in non-conference action.
The seven shutouts is a seasonal modern-day record for the women's soccer team. They started the season with six straight shutouts, which is also a modern-day record to start a season. Sophomore Taylor Franklin (Delaware, OH/Rutherford B. Hayes) registered four saves in recording the blanking.
"We played the way we were capable of playing," said head coach Steve Spirk. "Today we were fresh, organized and prepared."
Wilmington scored two game minutes into the match as freshman Rachelle Bowen (Xenia, OH/Xenia) scored off a corner kick served by sophomore Camille Gentille (Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg). The game was delayed 90 seconds into the game due to lightning, and almost immediately after the restart – the Fightin' Quakers were on the board.
In the game's 41st minute, freshman Lauren Lewis (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) set up sophomore Lauren Price (Xenia, OH/Waynesville) for another goal, and WC had some insurance going into the half.
Senior Sarah Watters (Cincinnati, OH/Turpin) scored off a nice feed from junior Sammy Koerner (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) in the 55th minute.
Wilmington (7-1-1) will travel to Delaware, OH to face Ohio Wesleyan in its final non-conference game before stepping into Ohio Athletic Conference action.
"Team spirit is good, we are fairly health and I am confident going into conference play," said Spirk.
