WILMINGTON – Freshman Liz Elson's goal in the 69th minute lifted the Wilmington College women's soccer team to the 1-0 victory Wednesday over Wittenberg at Williams Stadium. The game was moved to the turf field at Williams Stadium due to inclement weather.
With the victory, the Lady Quakers are 3-0 for the second time since 1983, and it's the first victory over the Tigers since a 4-1 win in 2002.
"The girls came ready to play even though we had to move from the grass to the turf field," said head coach Steve Spirk.
Wilmington has worked especially hard on converting in the corner kick situations, and finally got one of the eight attempts to find the back of the net.
Sophomore Camille Gentile (Brownsburg, IN/Brownburg) served ball off the corner that Elson deposited in the back of the net for the game's lone tally.
"We have been on our corners to be more aggressive, dangerous," said Spirk. "We had just inserted Liz into the game minutes before and she was able to get to the ball (on the corner)."
Wilmington's defense was superb, allowing just four shots and one on goal all game. Freshman Sarah Stauffer (Beavercreek/Beavercreek) earned her second shutout of the season in recording just one save.
The Lady Quakers will travel to Anderson Friday to participate in the Raven/Spartan Classic.
