WILMINGTON – The Wilmington College women's soccer team suffered their first loss of the season Sunday, falling to the College of Wooster, 3-2, in non-conference action at Charlie Gilhart Field.
Wilmington, playing its third game in four days, looked like a team playing with tired legs.
"That's a lot of competition," said head coach Steve Spirk. "We knew it was going to be a tough game when we scored first and they immediately came back after and scored."
With the score tied at two midway through the second half, the Lady Quakers had an excellent opportunity. Freshman Lauren Lewis (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) headed a corner kick right off the crossbar.
It later proved to be pivotal as the Fightin' Scot finished the game-winning goal in the game's 66th minute.
The Lady Quakers jumped out to the quick lead as senior Sarah Watters (Cincinnati, OH/Turpin) made an excellent run down the side and received a nice feed from junior Sammy Koerner (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin). Watters dribbled the final 30 yards and was able to beat the goalkeeper at the far post.
Wooster took the lead with goals in the 16th and 21st minutes, respectively.
Senior Kayla Falkenbach (Springfield, OH/Greenon) scored the equalizer in the 56th minute, powering home a pass from Watters. Freshman Sarah Stauffer (Beavercreek, OH/Beavercreek) registered three saves in falling to 3-1-1 on the season.
Wilmington (6-1-1) has nearly a week before taking the pitch again. The Fightin' Quakers will travel to Defiance to face the Yellow Jackets 1 p.m. Saturday.
