ALLIANCE, Ohio - the Wilmington College women's soccer suffered its first Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) loss of the season on Saturday, falling 2-0 at the University of Mount Union.
In their first road game during conference play, the Fightin' Quakers quickly found themselves on the defensive. Mount Union put three shots on frame in the first 10 minutes, and continued to hold a decided edge in shots, accumulating eight shots in the first half to Wilmington's two. The Wilmington defense was strong as senior keeper Lauren Galloway had four first half saves. The Quakers went into halftime tied 0-0, and hoped for a repeat of Wednesday's matchup vs. Muskingum University when the Quakers scored multiple second half goals and won in overtime.
Unfortunately, Mount Union was able to not only continue its offensive pressure from the first half, but add to it with 11 shots on goal in the second half alone. In the 50th minute, the Purple Raiders were awarded a penalty kick. A fantastic save by Lauren Galloway kept the visitors even. The Wilmington defense eventually broke in the 79th minute on a goal by Madison Pepper, assisted by Andrea Decker and Logan Godfrey. The Purple Raiders struck again in the 83rd minute on Pepper's second of the game assisted by Mary Double. Mount Union would go on to win the game 2-0 improving to 2-1-0 on the season. Wilmington is now 2-1-0 in conference.
The Purple Raiders held a 19-2 edge in shots including by a 9-1 margin in shots on goal. Maddie Scott fired both shots for the Quakers.
Up next, Wilmington (5-6-1, 2-1-0) returns home on Wednesday to face the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern University (7-3-2, 3-0-0) at 7 p.m.
