Quakers swim way to victories

DEFIANCE – The Wilmington College men's and women's swim team opened up the 2012-13 season with victories over Defiance in Ohio Athletic Conference action. Defiance is an associated OAC member for swimming. 

The women's team topped the Yellow Jackets 114-74, while the men's team claimed the 82-10 win over the Yellow Jackets.

"I thought we performed will in our first meet," said head coach Trip Breen. "I was pleased with our performances. I am looking forward to the season and build on the success. It was a good team experience. We are excited about this team, excited about the season and excited about the big day the school had."

Wilmington won eight of the 12 women's events Saturday. Senior Julie Creech (Dayton, OH/Centerville) claimed wins in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:43.82 and the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:03.92. Sophomore Addie Roberts (Franklin, OH/Franklin) also won two events for the Fightin' Quakers. She posted a win in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:09.03 and the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:50.72.

The men's team won all 12 events in the victory. Junior transfer Mikey Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) opened his college career with two individual wins and was a part of the winning 200-yard medley relay. Spraul covered the 100-yard backstroke in 55:08, which sets a new WC record, and finished the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:07.39

Both teams will host Baldwin-Wallace 1 p.m. Saturday.
