Seven records fall on day one

AKRON – Seven Wilmington College school records fell Thursday as the Fightin' Quakers competed in the first day of the Ohio Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Championships at Akron University.

"We have broken seven records in a meet before, but never in one day," said head coach Trip Breen. "Once we got over the first-day nerves and started racing, we performed well."

Sophomore Mason Harris (Westerville, OH/Central) broke the school's 500 freestyle mark twice, first swimming 4:49.06 in the morning preliminaries and then covering the distance in 4:45.41. He missed earning all-conference recognition by 0.32 seconds.

Senior Julie Creech (Dayton, OH/Centerville) kept the Creech name in the WC 500 record books. Harris broke the record previously held by her brother, John, in the morning session. She finished the distance in 5:18.90 to finish fifth.

The men's 400 medley race had two records fall in the evening finals. The team of junior Mikey Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton), Corbin Hellwarth (Celina, OH/Parkway), Harris and freshman David Hawk (Edison, OH/Mount Gilead) established a new mark with a time of 3:38.89. Spraul opened the event by swimming the 100 backstroke in 51.98 for a new school record. The team finished third, just missing all-conference accolades.

Not to be outdone by the men, the women's 400 medley relay team established a new mark of their own. Covering the distance in 4:10.50, the quartet of junior Victoria Burcham (Urbana, OH/Urbana), freshman Rachel Drake (Fairfield, OH/Fairfield), senior Julie Creech (Dayton, OH/Centerville) and sophomore Caroline Kruczynski (Grove City, OH/Central Crossing) moved into the WC swimming annals. Burcham, like Spraul, set a new 100 backstroke mark by kicking off the 400 medley race in 1:02.0.

Participation-wise, the men's 50 freestyle provided the best event for the Fightin' Quakers. Five swimmers – junior Alex Fout (Westerville, OH/Westerville), junior Casey Thompson (Liberty Township, OH/Lakota East), senior Dave Heidrich (Xenia, OH/Beavercreek), Hawk and Spraul all scored for WC.

Breen also pointed out senior Shelby Zornes (Milan, IN/Milan) beat her previous high-mark by 14 seconds, finishing the 500 freestyle in 5:46.66.
