Quakers Volleyball Earns First OAC Victory at Capital

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) - The Wilmington volleyball team defeated the Capital University Comets Wednesday night in Columbus, 3-1, after dropping the first set. They are now 9-8 overall and 1-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC).

The Quakers jumped out to a 10-5 lead in set one off the strength of two Sarah Brown kills. The Comets would come right back though and take a 15-12 lead after a 10-2 run. The two teams would battle to a 21-21 tie, before the Quakers used a Comet error to lead 22-21. Capital would end the set on a 4-0 run to win 25-22 and go up 1-0 in the match.

Set two was close throughout, but the Comets held a 16-12 advantage in the middle of the set. A 4-0 run for Wilmington was fueled by Sofia Thomas, who had a kill and two aces to help tie the set at 16-16. The Quakers would fall behind again though at 22-18. A trio of Brown kills and Comet errors would bring the set home for Wilmington at 25-23 to tie the match 1-1.

Neither team gave an inch in the third set, as they were all tied up at 22-22. Brown dominated the set for the Quakers, recording six kills, with two coming in a 3-0 flurry to end the set with a 25-22 Wilmington win to give them a 2-1 match lead.

The final set was all Wilmington as they led 23-13. The Comets used a 4-0 run to try and make it interesting, but they would hold on for the 25-17 set win and 3-1 match win.

Notables

  • Sophomore Sarah Brown recorded a career high 22 kills in the match, hitting an incredible .528. This was her fourth match in a row with double-digit kills and seventh match of the season in double digits.
  • Junior Andie Dolven had 35 assists, her fourth match this season with 31 or more assists.
  • Junior Emma Schroer had 23 digs, her seventh match this season with 20 or more digs.
  • Senior Sofia Thomas had 17 digs, her 10th match this season with double digit digs.
  • Joy Bebe and Josie Crabtree had three block solos a piece.
