Volleyball Opens 2023 Season at Big Red Invitational at Denison This Weekend

SERIES HISTORY - DENISON | FRANKLIN

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College volleyball team opens its 2023 season with a trip to Granville, Ohio, for the Big Red Invitational on the campus of Denison University this weekend.

The Schedule: The Quakers will face the host Big Red on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and conclude the weekend with matches against Franklin College (Indiana) and Washington & Jefferson College (Pennsylvania) at 1 p.m. & 3 p.m. respectively on Saturday.

The Teams: Wilmington, Denison, Franklin and Washington & Jefferson (W&J). The Quakers finished 9-19 a season ago which included Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) victories against Capital University at at Heidelberg University. The Big Red, who were picked second in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Preseason Poll, were an even 13-13 in 2022 while the Grizzlies are looking to rebound from an 8-16 season last year. Finally, the Presidents were 11-12 in 2022.

The Coaches: Aly Wiseman, who spent one season as an assistant coach, was named Wilmington's head volleyball coach in the summer of 2023. She aided the Quakers to one of their best seasons in recent memory in 2022, culminating with WC's first-ever win over Heidelberg University. Carter Cassell enters his seventh season as Denison's head coach while Randi Garrett is in her third season leading the Grizzlies' program. Lindsey Llewellyn begins her second season at the helm of the W&J program.

The Players: Wilmington returns three of its top four offensive players from a season ago in Sofia Thomas, Joy Bebe and Sarah Brown. Thomas averaged 2.44 kills per set while Bebe & Brown joined her in hitting over a .150 clip. Setter Andie Dolven also returns for her junior season having averaged nearly eight assists per set in 2022. Kelly McCaskey and Sophia Sobota both averaged between 2-3 kills per set for Denison while Miranda Wilson and Kaitlyn Lavy combined to average over five kills per set for the Grizzlies. For W&J, Lizzie Carmichael and Jaden Blough are the two President returns to have averaged over two kills per set last season.

Series History: Wilmington is 0-4 against Denison, 6-12 against Franklin and 0-0 against W&J in the last 15 seasons. More information on the series history can be viewed by visiting the links above.
