BETHANY, West Virginia – Niklas Martnesson scored a penalty kick goal in the 67th minute to lift the Wilmington College men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory at Bethany College (West Virginia) on Saturday afternoon.

The victory was the Fightin' Quakers' first road triumph of the 2018 season.

"I thought we responded well from a midweek game at Hanover [College] in which we were clearly not ready to play," Head Coach Alex Van der Sluijs said. "Our goal today was to be ready from the first whistle and compete for the full 90 minutes. I'm proud of our mentality change."

Both teams took six shots in the first half, but neither team could break through the other's defense. The Quakers amped up the offensive pressure in the second half, however, outshooting the Bison 11-2 in the half. The pressure paid off at the 66:36 mark as Wilmington drew a foul inside the box. Martensson, who was 1-for-2 on penalty kicks on the season coming into the game, buried the shot that proved to be the game's only goal.

Wilmington outshot Bethany 17-8 in the game including an 8-2 margin in shots on goal. Goalkeeper Felix Maurer earned the shutout victory making two saves while Torben Grether took the loss despite making seven saves.

Individually, Martensson and Tank combined for nine of Wilmington's 17 shots while Iwan Mooney fired three shots for Bethany.

There were 34 fouls committed including seven yellow cards given out along with one ejection. The Bison played the last 18:26 a man down.

Wilmington improves to 3-3-0 overall and hosts Earlham College for the Quaker Bowl Rivalry on Wednesday evening.
