WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College men's soccer team looks for its first road victory of the 2018 season when the Fightin' Quakers travel to Bethany College (West Virginia) for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday.
The Teams: Wilmington and Bethany. The Quakers stand at 2-3-0 on the season after falling to Hanover College 4-0 on Wednesday evening. The Bison are 2-3-1 overall after recently falling to Mount Aloysius College 2-0 on Wednesday.
The Coaches: Alex Van der Sluijs is in his first year leading Wilmington's men's soccer team. The 2007 alumnus, who was a three-time First Team All-OAC selection and a member of the program's only team to win an OAC title in 2004, worked at Defiance College for seven seasons. Sean Regan is in his 10ths season as head coach at Bethany. The Bison achieved back-to-back eight-win seasons the last two years.
The Players: Niklas Martensson, who garnered All-Tournament team honors at the Kiwanis Classic last weekend, leads the Quakers with four goals, one assist and nine points as well as firing a team-high 18 shots. Martensson scored one goal and assisted on another in Wilmington's 3-1 triumph over Denison. Daniel Kappelin, who also scored against the Big Red, has scored three goals this season. Jay O'Donnell and Mikel Ubeda have both scored two goals for Bethany.
Series History: Wilmington is 11-6-5 against Bethany in the last three decades. The Quakers are 1-2-3 at Bethany during that time, however, as the Bison won 1-0 the last time the two teams played in West Virginia (Sept. 24, 2016).
