Men's Soccer Loses Physical Game to Marietta 2-1

WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Wilmington College Fightin' Quakers fell short in a very physical match in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) against the Pioneers from Marietta College Saturday evening by a score of 2-1.

The loss marks the first win for the Pioneers in OAC competition with a record of 1-4-0 and 7-7-0 overall. The Quakers fall to 7-6-0 overall and 2-3-0 in OAC competition.

The Pioneers started strong with a goal in the 11th minute coming from Luke Maher with his third goal of the season. Niklas Martensson had a shot hit the crossbar in the 22nd minute before scoring from a penalty kick for the Quakers in the 43rd minute. Martensson currently sits second in goals scored in the OAC with 14.

The second half saw the Pioneers score the winning goal from a 59th minute penalty kick goal by Cole Pappas. The Quakers kept fighting until the end though with shots hitting the crossbar in the 81st and 86th minutes.

The Pioneers outshot the Quakers 16-9 on their way to an OAC win. Dakota Penquite takes credit for the win in goal for the Pioneers with three saves. Felix Maurer played in goal for the Quakers and had five saves on the evening. Eight yellow cards were awarded in the very physical match with two for the Pioneers and six for the Quakers.

The Quakers will continue OAC play Wednesday, Oct. 17 at home against the Cardinals of Otterbein University. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
