Two-out thunder stings @DubC_Softball

The Wilmington College softball team dropped both ends of an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with John Carroll Sunday. The twin bill was moved from University Heights due to inclement weather.

JOHN CARROLL 9, WILMINGTON 3 (GAME 1)

John Carroll scored six two-out runs, including a pair of solo homeruns in the first, to register the 9-3 win in the opener.

After the Blue Streaks took the lead in the top of the first, Wilmington battled back in the bottom of the second. Senior Megan Warren (Grove City, OH/Grove City) opened the rally with a leadoff double, and sophomore Chandler Fields (Delaware, OH/Rutherford B. Hayes) walked. Sophomore Whitney Edwards (Frankfort, KY/Franklin County) moved the runners to scoring position with a sacrifice bunt.

A fielder's choice scored Warren, and Fields scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Allison Pierce (Troy, OH/Troy).

However, JCU answered with three in the third, one in the fifth and three more in the seventh.

Warren, who had a pair of doubles, accounted for two of Wilmington's three hits. Junior Kerrie Trautman (Hartville, OH/Field) had the other WC hit.

Sophomore Becca Carpenter, 3-7, (South Charleston, OH/Southeastern) took the loss, allowing nine runs (seven earned) on 10 hits in seven innings of work.

JOHN CARROLL 7, WILMINGTON 0

The John Carroll Blue Streaks did the entirety of their scoring in the second game with two outs, including four in the seventh, to record the 7-0 win and secure the sweep.

Sophomore Beth Persicano, 1-1, (Knoxville, TN/Cincinnati Turpin) made her first start since being injured in the second game of the season. She was pitching well until she allowed three straight two-out hits in the fifth inning, and by the time she was relieved, WC trailed 3-0.

She surrendered three earned runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings with two strikeouts and a walk.

Once again, JCU found its hitting stroke with two outs in the seventh. A two-run single and a two-run homerun accounted for the four runs in the seventh inning.

Four different players – sophomore Savannah Hooper (Leesburg, OH/Wilmington), sophomore Courtney Mackey (Wooster, OH/Northwestern), Warren and Edwards – registered hits for Wilmington.

Wilmington (8-12 overall, 0-6 OAC) returns to the diamond 3 p.m. Tuesday to host Ohio Northern in OAC action.
