WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Wilmington College men's track and field team opens the New Year at the Marietta Open hosted by Marietta College on Saturday. Events are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
The Teams: Wilmington will be joined by host Marietta along with the following institutions: Alderson Broaddus University, Bethany College (West Virginia), Kentucky Christian University, Franciscan University, West Liberty University, Capital University, Charleston College, Point Park University, Allegheny College and West Virginia Wesleyan University.
The Coach: Ron Combs enters his 22nd season as the head coach of Wilmington's men's and women's track and field teams. Combs has been named Coach of the Year, twice by the Heartland Athletic Conference, and once by the OAC. In 2002, he led the men's indoor team to a sixth-place finish at NCAA DIII Championships.
Who to Watch: Wilmington's distance individuals won events at the team's first and only competition of the season to date – The Tiger Open on Dec. 6, 2019. Simon Heys, Taton Bertsch and David Wahl won the 3,000-meter run, mile run and 1,000-meter run respectively while Evan Whitaker and Cameron Phelps finished in the top three of the 3,000-meter run and the mile run respectively. In field events, Blake Jamison (first) and Joe Shuga (third) placed highly in the shot put and weight throw events while Jeff Clydesdale and Anthony Gilmore finished in the top three of the high jump.
