Extra innings heartbreak part of sweep

Extra innings heartbreak part of sweep

For the second consecutive doubleheader, the Wilmington College baseball team went into extra innings. Unfortunately, the result was the same as the Fightin' Quakers dropped the opener in 12 innings, and then fell in the nightcap in the shortened game.

KENYON 14, WILMINGTON 11 – 12 INNINGS (GAME ONE)

A pair of two-out errors in the bottom of the 12th inning allowed the visiting Kenyon Lords to push across three unearned runs across the plate for the 14-11 loss.

Wilmington took advantage of some wildness in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. Back-to-back bases loaded walks, and an infield hit by sophomore Daniel Hayes (Beavercreek, OH/Beavercreek) left the tying run just 90 feet away with no outs.

Sophomore Jake Robinson (Westerville, OH/South) brought home that run with a one-out sacrifice fly, capping a four-run inning and a five-run comeback.

The errors extra innings blemished the relief outing by freshman Joey Hollback, 1-2, (Salem, OH/Sebring McKinney). The southpaw went five innings of extra innings relief, allowing three unearned runs on four hits with one strikeout. He entered with runners on second and third, no outs in the eighth inning, Hollback got out of the inning with just one run scored.

A two-out, bases loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth inning brought home the equalizer for the Fightin' Quakers.

Kenyon threatened in the 10th, but a pair of baserunning blunders kept the game even.

Freshman Gage Bley (Harrison, OH/Harrison) had a career-high five hits in seven at-bats with a double, run scored, an RBI and a stolen base. Senior Corey Walker (Hillsboro, OH/Hillboro) was 3-for-5 with a career-high four runs scored, a triple, stolen base and an RBI.

Hayes drove in a career-high three RBI on 2-for-4 hitting, while Robinson finished with three RBI. Freshman Jake Hyatt (Madeira, OH/Madeira) was 2-for-7 in the game.

Senior Tyler Schrock (Waynesville, OH/Waynesville) picked up the no-decision, allowing 10 runs on 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings. Freshman Jared Ferenchak (Chardon, OH/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) surrendered just one run in 2 1/3 innings of relief.

KENYON 12, WILMINGTON 4 – FIVE INNINGS, DARKNESS (GAME TWO)

Wilmington allowed all 12 runs in the second and third innings, the final seven of which were unearned, in the 12-4 non-conference loss in a game shortened by darkness.

Six straight Kenyon batters reached either via hit or error in the seven run second inning, and then a two-out error in the third inning opened the flood gates. The Lords scored five runs with a double, single, hit by pitch, double and a single.

Senior Billy Foster, 0-3, (Xenia, OH/Xenia) took the loss, yielding seven runs (five earned) on seven hits in two innings.

Bley was the lone Wilmington hitter with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 and an RBI. Walker tallied WC's only extra-base hit, a second-inning double.

Wilmington (3-18) travels to Richmond, IN to face Earlham in a non-conference nine-inning game.
