Softball Bested On the Road at Mount Union

(ALLIANCE, Ohio) – The Wilmington College softball team lost both their games on the road Saturday afternoon against the top team in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) this season, the University of Mount Union Purple Raiders. The Quakers lost game one 9-4 and game two 7-2. Wilmington had the lead cut down to one run in both games, but couldn't tie it up or take the lead. The team is now 15-18-1 overall this season and 3-11 in the OAC.

Game One – Mount Union defeats Wilmington, 9-4

The Purple Raiders grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and extended it to 4-0 after the bottom of third frame. Wilmington had a runner in scoring position in the first inning.

Wilmington struck for three runs in the top of the fourth to put pressure on Mount Union. The Quakers had runners on second and third with one out, before Claire Scully got them on the board with a double to left field. Alasandra Spears followed with an RBI single, before she stole second base, drawing the throw, which allowed Scully to score their final run of the inning and make the score 4-3.

Mount Union extended the lead back out to 6-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, and scored three in the fifth for a 9-3 lead. Wilmington scored one more run in the top of the seventh on a two-out Chloe Dorn double to left center after Rachel Berry kept the inning alive with a single to center field.

Game One Notables

Game Two – Mount Union defeats Wilmington, 7-2

The Purple Raiders held a 2-0 lead after two innings with single runs in the first and second frames. The Quakers had a runner at second in the third inning before striking in the fourth for a run. With two outs, Claire Scully and Alasandra Spears both singled to bring in Jocelyn Franz, who singled to start the inning.

A five run fifth inning doomed Wilmington. The final run of the game for the Quakers came off a Spears homerun to left field.

Game Two Notables

  • Alasandra Spears had two hits and both the Quakers runs batted in (RBI). She hit her second homerun of the season.
  • Spears and Jocelyn Franz scored a run.

Wilmington's next games come next Saturday for their Senior Day doubleheader at the WC Softball Complex against the John Carroll University Blue Streaks beginning at 1:00 P.M.
