Timely Hitting Leads Softball to Sweep of Bluffton

(BLUFFTON, Ohio) – The Wilmington College softball team swept the Bluffton University Beavers on the road Tuesday afternoon, winning game one 10-8 in extra innings and taking game two, 13-5. The Quakers had 30 hits across the two contests to push their record to 13-8-1 overall this season. They are scheduled to be back in action tomorrow afternoon against conference foe Ohio Northern University.

Game One – Wilmington defeats Bluffton, 10-8 (8 innings)

The Quakers picked up a two-out run in the first inning to grab a 1-0 lead. Judaea Wilson singled and advanced to second on an error by the left fielder. She was immediately hit home by Maddie Summers on a single into right field.

Ashley Hardesty got the second inning rolling with a double to right center field and would be brought in later by a Chloe Dorn double off the left field fence to push the score to 2-0. Bluffton tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second frame.

The Quakers pushed across another two-out run in the third inning after Claire Scully singled to keep the inning alive and stole second. She was hit in by an Alasandra Spears single into left field for a 3-2 lead. Wilmington scored another run in the fourth on a Jocelyn Franz RBI single through the left side for a 4-2 advantage. Bluffton tied the game in the bottom of the fourth at 4-4.

Wilmington had big two-out hits once again in the top of the fifth. They had runners on second and third with two outs and a Rachel Berry infield hit brought in the first run before a two-RBI Dorn single extended the lead to 7-4.

Wilmington held a 7-5 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. They had two outs, but the Beavers rallied and had three consecutive two-out singles to bring in the tying runs and send it to extras.

Dorn, Kori Cornett, and Franz all had RBI base hits in the eighth inning for three Quaker runs and a 10-7 lead. The Quakers shut the door in the bottom of the inning to win the game.

Game One Notables

Game Two – Wilmington defeats Bluffton, 13-5

The Quakers took advantage of a Bluffton mishap in the first inning and scored two unearned runs for a 2-0 lead. More two-out hitting followed in the second as Judaea Wilson drove in two runs with a single through the right side for a 4-1 lead.

Wilmington scored six runs in the top of the fourth frame. Kori Cornett, Wilson, and Claire Scully all had two-RBI base hits, as the Quakers took a commanding 10-1 lead. Their lead would grow to 12-1 after two more runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Bluffton tried to make it a game with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the Quakers would score one more run and cruise to a 13-5 victory.

Game Two Notables

  • Judaea Wilson had four hits in the contest and a career-high five RBI.
  • Kori Cornett had three hits and three RBI.
  • Rachel Berry had a pair of hits and Claire Scully drove in two runs for Wilmington.
  • The Quakers stole six bases in the game.
  • Makenzie O'Neil threw four innings in the circle and struck out two batters. She earned the first win of her collegiate career.

The Quakers are right back on the field tomorrow afternoon in Ada, Ohio in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play against Ohio Northern University with first pitch of their doubleheader scheduled for Noon.
