WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College softball team concludes the 2021 spring regular season with a four-game series against Capital University this weekend. The Fightin' Quakers host the Crusaders for a twinbill at 2 p.m. on Thursday and travel to Bexley for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Friday (note the day/time change).
The Teams: Wilmington and Capital. The Quakers are 16-20 overall and 15-17 in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) competition after falling in four games to nationally-ranked the University of Mount Union last weekend. The Crusaders are 12-20 overall and in conference play after splitting a four-game series with Marietta College on the weekend.
The Coaches: Beth Floyd is in her 14th season as Wilmington's softball head coach. She is the winningest softball coach in school history and is also the College's associate director of athletics. Floyd has led the Quakers to the program's first winning season with a 20-16 record in 2013. Andrea Nagy, a 2014 graduate of Cleveland State University, is in her second season as the Crusaders' head coach.
The Hitters: Arianna Layne leads Wilmington offensively with seven home runs, 24 RBIs, 16 walks drawn and a .37 batting average. Another freshman, Lindsey Carter, has hit three home runs, a team-best seven doubles and carries a .325 batting average. Hayley Suchland has swiped nine bases and has hit six home runs. Lexie Leggett leads the Crusaders offensively with eight doubles, five home runs, 23 RBIs and 48 total bases.
The Pitchers: A trio of Quakers – Alexis Stringfellow, Suchland and Carter – have all pitched over 60 innings for Wilmington and all have ERAs below 4.25. Stringfellow has pitched a team-best 86.2 innings with a 3.39 ERA while Suchland has struck out 42 batters. Carter has a team-low 14 walks. Brianna Shearer has been Capital's most effective pitcher to date. She carries a 2.05 ERA in 95.2 innings with 66 strikeouts.
OAC Hitter of the Week: Capital's Alysa Durbin is the reigning OAC Hitter of the Week.
OAC Tournament: With four regular season games left, Wilmington currently sits fifth in the conference. The top six make the OAC Tournament, held next week.
Series History: Wilmington is 5-17 against Capital since 2009. The Crusaders have won the last two meetings, both of which were one-run contests. More information on the series history can be viewed by visiting the link above.
