Softball Faces No. 15 Mount Union in Weekend Series Featuring Senior Day

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College softball team continues Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play with a four-game series against the University of Mount Union this weekend. The Fightin' Quakers will host the Purple Raiders for a twinbill on Saturday and head to Alliance for a pair of games on Sunday. First pitch for both days is slated to begin at 1 p.m.

The Teams: Wilmington and Mount Union. The Quakers are an even 16-16 overall and sit fourth in the OAC with a 15-13 conference record. Wilmington is, however, looking to rebound from falling 3-1 in a series to John Carroll University on the weekend. The Purple Raiders are 26-6 overall, 23-5 in conference play and have won 9-of-10 games heading into the weekend.

The Coaches: Beth Floyd is in her 14th season as Wilmington's softball head coach. She is the winningest softball coach in school history and is also the College's associate director of athletics. Floyd has led the Quakers to the program's first winning season with a 20-16 record in 2013. Meghan Simons, a graduate of Mount Union, is in her sixth season coaching her alma mater.

The Hitters: Arianna Layne leads Wilmington offensively with seven home runs, 23 RBIs, 15 walks drawn and a .402 batting average. Another freshman, Lindsey Carter, has hit three home runs, a team-best seven doubles and carries a .349 batting average. Hayley Suchland has swiped eight bases and has hit six home runs. Mount Union features one of the best offenses in the country as six Purple Raiders have driven in over 20 runs. Three of those individuals – Maddie Pidgeon, Grace Heath and Brooklyn Hellman – hit over a .420 clip with Pidgeon leading the way with 13 doubles and 37 RBIs.

The Pitchers: Alexis Stringfellow and Hayley Suchland have both pitched over 60 innings for the Quakers and both carry ERAs in the 3.00s. Stringfellow has a team-best 3.28 ERA in 79 innings which Suchland leads the squad in strikeouts with 42. Lindsey Carter has also pitched over 40 innings for Wilmington. Peyton Morrison and Cheyanne Bosse both have 2.82 ERAs for Mount Union with Morrison leading the way in wins (12), complete games (10), innings pitched (77) and strikeouts (61).

Senior Day: A brief ceremony will be held for four Wilmington seniors – Bailey Smith, Megan Crager, Sydney Harvill and Alecia Kemp.
