SERIES HISTORY

WILMINGTON, Ohio – After a significant wait, the Wilmington College women's basketball team opens the 2020-21 season with a pair of contests against Ohio Northern University (ONU) this weekend.

The Schedule: The Fightin' Quakers will travel to Ada for a 7 p.m. contest on Friday while the Polar Bears will come to Hermann Court for a 6 p.m. game on Saturday.

The Teams: Wilmington and Ohio Northern. The Quakers finished last season 11-15 and fell in the quarterfinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament quarterfinal. The Polar Bears finished 20-7 a season ago and made an appearance in the OAC Tournament semifinals. Coincidentally, both Wilmington and ONU had their seasons ended by John Carroll University.

The Coaches: Both WC and ONU are led by first-year coaches who both worked under Jerry Scheve. Janel Blankespoor, Wilmington's interim head coach for the season, has been the program's top assistant coach for the last two years. She's also no stranger to the OAC, having graduated from Otterbein University and assisted at the University of Mount Union, as well as being familiar with an interim role having held that title at Earlham College. Mark Huelsman, a graduate of Wittenberg University, has been ONU's top assistant for the last seven seasons. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach at Wilmington.

The Players: Wilmington returns its top three scorers including McKayla Binkley, who led the OAC in scoring at 18.3 points per game a season ago. She also led the team in rebounding at 7.5 boards per contest. Twin sister Hannah Binkley and junior Kennedy Lewis also averaged double figures in scoring. ONU will have to replace its top three scores from last season. Lexi Jacobs and Brynn Serbin combined to average nearly a dozen points per game. Serbin, the OAC's Freshman of the Year last season, grabbed three rebounds per game in 2019-20.

Tale of the Tape (2019-20): Points per game – Wilmington 77.8, ONU 61.2; opponents' points per game – Wilmington 74.0, ONU 55.2; field goal percentage – Wilmington 41.3, ONU 39.5; three-point percentage – Wilmington 31.5, ONU 29.2; free throw percentage – Wilmington 70.7, ONU 68.0; rebounds per game – Wilmington 42.1, ONU 38.6; assist-to-turnover ratio – Wilmington 0.86, ONU 0.89.

Recent History: Wilmington is 22-28 against ONU since becoming an NCAA Division III member in the early 1990s. The Polar Bears do carry a hefty winning streak against the Quakers, however, having won the last 15 contests. More information can be viewed by visiting the link above.

COVID-19 Precautions: The OAC Presidents made the difficult decision to not allow any fans at athletic contests until at least March 1.
