ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Wilmington College softball team fell to No. 15 the University of Mount Union in a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) contests on Sunday, losing 3-1 in game one and 11-3 in five innings in game two.
In game one, Wilmington opened the scoring in the top of the first as Alecia Kemp doubled home Lindsey Carter, who walked to open the game, in the top of the first inning. Mount Union matched the Quakers' two-out, RBI-hit in the bottom half of the inning as Maggie Dominick's double to right center scored two runs.
The hosts added an insurance run in the top of the third as Brooke Hellman doubled to left field and scored on an error to open the bottom of the third. Trailing 3-1, the Quakers got the tying run on base in the seventh with one out, but Alyssa Rose, the game two winner in the series, earned the two-out save as a pop out and a groundout ended the game.
Cheyanne Bosse earned the win pitching 6.1 innings scattering four hits with five walks and two strikeouts. Carter took the loss allowing two earned runs on eight hits with one strikeout.
Wilmington had four hits in the game including two off the bat of Andrea Edmisten. Brooklyn Hellman had a multi-hit game for Mount Union while also scoring two runs and stealing a base.
In game two, Hayley Suchland scored the game's first run on a steal of home, but the Purple Raider offense scored in every inning including a six-run fourth inning that that looked to end the game in five innings for the hosts.
Trailing 10-1, the Quakers' bats, which had recorded a single hit through the first four innings, put together a two-out rally in the fifth. Suchland singled to shortstop and crossed the plate on a double from Arianna Layne. Kemp kept the game going by singling home Layne with a shot to right field. Unfortunately for Wilmington, a solo home run from pinch hitter Taylor Gerback to open the bottom of the fifth ended the game.
Peyton Morrison, the starter in game one of the series, improved to 14-1 on the series allowing one hit with two walks and three strikeouts in four innings. Stringfellow fell to 8-5 on the season allowing four earned runs on eight hits in two innings.
Offensively, four Quakers had a hit with Layne's double being the extra-base hit. Allie Goldy and Maggie Dominick both had three-hit game for the Purple Raiders with Dominick leading the charge in runs batted in with four.
Wilmington (16-20, 15-17 OAC) will look to return to winning ways with the final regular season series of the 2021 season against Capital University next weekend.
