WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College softball team opens its 2021 season with a non-conference series against Otterbein University this weekend.

The Schedule: The Fightin' Quakers will host the Cardinals for a doubleheader at the WC Softball Complex at 1 p.m. on Saturday and head to Westerville for a 1 p.m.

The Teams: Wilmington and Otterbein. The Quakers finished their 2020 spring trip to Florida with a 7-3 record only find out shortly after leaving the field that the rest of their season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Cardinals were 6-3 during a spring trip to South Carolina when their season was cut short for the same reason.

The Coaches: Beth Floyd is starting her 14th season as Wilmington's softball head coach. She is the winningest softball coach in school history and is also the College's associate director of athletics. Floyd has led the Quakers to the program's first winning season with a 20-16 record in 2013. Brook Donovan, a Coastal Carolina University graduate, begins her third season as head softball coach at Otterbein.

The Hitters: Hayley Suchland, who led the Fightin' Quakers in batting average last year with a .361 clip and 14 RBIs, returns for her junior year. Senior Megan Crager had a team-high five stolen bases, recorded a .333 in batting average, and had five RBIs. Senior Hannah Dobrinick, for the Otterbein Cardinals, led her team in batting average last year at a .500 clip while scoring nine RBIs.

The Pitchers: Alexis Stringfellow and Haley Suchland are both returning pitchers for the Fightin' Quakers. Stringfellow with 18 pitched innings and an ERA of 2.33 while Suchland pitched 13 innings and had an ERA of 1.08. Erin Vonderwell was Otterbein's top pitcher in a shortened season with 17.1 innings in the circle and an ERA of 0.81.

Home Sweet Home: The doubleheader at the WC Softball Complex marks the first home game for the program since April 28, 2019.

Series History: Wilmington is 4-18 against Otterbein in the last decade with the Fightin' Quakers winning the most recent game. More information on the series history can be viewed by visiting the link above.
